There are two types of acrylic dentures: Complete removable dentures and Partial dentures.
Complete Removable Dentures
Are suitable for those patients who have no natural teeth remaining in their mouth.
A Complete denture is made out of pink gum coloured plastic base, which supports a full set of acrylic teeth. The shape and colour of the teeth are chosen to best match the patients facial shape and structure. The traditional full denture is held in the mouth by forming a seal with the gums.
Another option is to have a full denture that is held in place by dental implants, which are surgically placed in the bone of the jaw. This treatment is much more expensive than the traditional complete denture.
Partial Dentures
Are suitable for those patients with two or more of their natural teeth remaining. This removable partial denture usually consists of replacement teeth set in pink or gum coloured acrylic resin. One or more wire clasps are placed around the natural teeth to assist in retention of the partial denture.
Acrylic partial vs. metal frame partial:
Although not as thin and durable as a chrome partial denture, Acrilic dentures are a more cost effective option. They are easier to repair and can be made as an immediate denture and inserted straight after extraction. A reline is generally required in the near future to ensure the best fit.
